CENTS THRU HALVES: Clad Kennedy Half Dollars continue to be hot with the 2010-S spiking 60% this week on reports of having the lowest mintage ever. San Francisco Unc Lincoln Cent rolls from 1970-S thru 1974-S are needed in quantity at higher levels.
MERCURY DIMES: Supporters of this segment remain cautious and are not offering more than current Bid. Discounting is absent here with no declines to report.
WALKING LIBERTY HALVES: Bidders are not competing as aggressively for generics as they had been just a few months ago in their quest for Walkers. Even a few key-dates are contending with slight market weakness, as demonstrated by the prices realized for the scarcer specimens appearing at recent auctions.
DOLLARS: Many generic Morgans in MS63 are inching back up to retrieve their modest losses from last week, while a handful of better-dates in higher grades slid by small measures. Those eye-catching 1881-S issues in MS65DMPL slid back down to $750 Bid, but there were two other noteworthy and more serious declines: The 1900 in MS67 fell by 34%, while the 1902 MS64DMPL took a near 20% drop. Peace Dollars in VG and Fine resumed their seesaw motion with a mild upswing again this week. 1934-S Dollars in MS66, with a combined pop of 39 and none finer, are Bidding 35% higher at $28,000.
PROOF SETS AND MINT SETS: 2010-S Clad Proof Sets are no longer being offered by the Mint and Bid has jumped by 30% on the news that they have the lowest mintage at 1.1 million since 1958 when 875,652 Proof Sets were made. A few of the Prestige Proof Sets took a hit, dropping a little.
COMMEMORATIVES: Several Silver Commems continue to weaken as there are now fewer Bidders willing to commit, considering how abruptly some examples have cascaded downward within a relatively short period of time. Gold Commems seem to be buckling to discount pressure as Bids for the 1917 McKinley and Grant with Star Gold Dollars in MS63 retreated by 10% and 6%, respectively.
TYPE: Copper mania has taken hold of the Mint State Type segment, as Coronet Large Cents in MS63RB and MS64RB, as well as Indian Head Cents in MS63BN thru MS65BN, are among the favorites this week. Twenty Cent Pieces in MS64 were discounted after a solid example sold at auction for a song. Among Proof Type, Three Cent Nickels in PR65 edged slightly higher, and Type 3 Three Cent Silver Pieces in PR60 thru PR65 each added yet more muscle to their Bids as they had two weeks ago. Shield Nickels with Rays in PR65, which don’t often get bargained-down, fell back by $175.
GOLD: $2½ Indians spiked 5% in MS63, and are up for the third straight week in MS64, increasing $45 while their peers in Gem shed $75. Gold Spot is up over $1,650, a level not seen since December 13 of last year. Generic $20 Saints in VF20 thru MS65 and Type 3 Libs thru MS63 are all up in reaction to this higher Gold Spot.
